North Shields and the River Tyne
North Shields and the River Tyne

was fascinated by the variety of maps that are part of the collection at The Old Low Light. This piece is an amalgamation of a number of maps including the map from Henry VIII’s reign which has the Tyne running vertically, a map of wrecks with wrecks marked in red and marks from the large map in the corridor.

I wanted to create the feeling of an old map that is stained through use. The piece is a patchwork created from a variety of hand and rust dyed fabrics. It is quilted with free-machined words and hand stitch.
